Channel and North Sea coasts: caution recommended in the face of high tides

High Tide Warning for the Manche and North Sea Coastline

Dates to watch: Friday, February 28 to Monday, March 3

The Maritime Prefecture of the Manche and North Sea urges maximum caution as exceptionally high tides are expected along the Normandy and Pas-de-Calais coasts. These tides, with coefficients peaking at 111 on Sunday, March 2, will intensify marine currents, making the sea particularly dangerous.

Increased risks for walkers and shore fishermen

High tide events often attract many visitors to the coast, but the prefecture warns that just a few minutes can be enough to become isolated by the rising tide. In 2024, 407 people were stranded, often due to a lack of awareness of tide dynamics and their speed.

Safety tips to enjoy the coast without danger:

  • Plan your outing: Check the weather forecast, tide times, and coefficients before heading out for a walk or sea activity.
  • Inform your loved ones: Share your itinerary and estimated return times so help can be dispatched quickly in case of an emergency.
  • Keep a visual landmark: Always stay within sight of a safe retreat point.
  • Carry a means of communication: Bring a fully charged phone or a VHF radio to contact emergency services if necessary.

Emergency contact numbers at sea:

  • 196 (emergency call)
  • Channel 16 on VHF

By staying cautious and well-informed, everyone can admire the power of the high tides while staying safe. Don’t hesitate to share these recommendations to help protect your loved ones and enjoy the coastline with peace of mind.
