War in Ukraine: Emmanuel Macron describes Russia as an ‘existential threat’ and denounces Vladimir Putin’s revisionist imperialism

Macron Faces the Russian Threat: Between Firmness and Openness to Dialogue

During an exceptional European defense summit, Emmanuel Macron described Russia as an “existential threat” to Europe, emphasizing that the war in Ukraine already has global repercussions. The French president pointed out that Moscow violates borders to eliminate opponents and manipulates elections in Romania and Moldova, illustrating an aggression without limits.

A Europe That Must Strengthen Its Defense

In response to this threat, Macron stressed the need for Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities and build strategic autonomy in the coming years. “We must be able to defend ourselves,” he declared, highlighting the importance of a more robust European defense industry. Currently, only France, along with the United Kingdom, possesses nuclear weapons in Western Europe, with other countries relying on the American nuclear umbrella.

A Warning to Vladimir Putin

The French president also condemned Vladimir Putin’s stance, stating that Russia is the only imperial power in Europe and that its leader is a “revisionist imperialist.” He recalled that Putin had already broken signed agreements, such as the Minsk accords, and seeks a temporary ceasefire to prepare for further offensives rather than lasting peace.

In response to Putin’s remarks referencing Napoleon, Macron said, “He was stung because we exposed his game.” Despite this verbal escalation, the French head of state reiterated his willingness to engage in dialogue with Putin “at the right time,” in coordination with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while rejecting the idea of a rushed ceasefire or a settlement without solid guarantees for Ukraine.

This stance underscores France and Europe’s determination to stand firm against Russian ambitions while keeping the door open to a diplomatic resolution under conditions that ensure the security and sovereignty of European nations.
