Macron announces accelerated Rafale orders and major investment for Luxeuil base

On Tuesday, March 18, Emmanuel Macron announced an increase and acceleration of Rafale orders for the Air Force as part of strengthening defense capabilities in response to geopolitical upheavals. During his visit to the 116th Luxeuil-les-Bains Air Base in Haute-Saône, he also confirmed that this site would become the first to host the future version of the Rafale, equipped with a hypersonic nuclear missile.

A €1.5 billion investment to modernize Luxeuil

To prepare for this transition, the state will invest €1.5 billion to adapt the air base. This modernization plan will accommodate two new Rafale squadrons—about 40 aircraft—and will double the base’s personnel, with 2,000 military and civilian staff expected by 2035.

“Our country and our continent will need to continue defending themselves, equipping themselves, and preparing themselves if we want to avoid war,” said the President of the Republic, who promised further defense announcements in the coming weeks.

Luxeuil, a pillar of nuclear deterrence

The 116th Air Base, already participating in the “permanent security posture” of French airspace and NATO missions, will now play a central role in nuclear deterrence. It will join the bases in Saint-Dizier, Istres, and Avord, which are already engaged in this strategic mission.

Founded in 1912, Luxeuil base has a rich military history, having hosted the Lafayette Squadron during World War I. From 1966 to 2011, it also contributed to France’s airborne nuclear deterrence.
