Olivier Grondeau Released After 29 Months of Detention in Iran

After 887 days of captivity in Iran, French citizen Olivier Grondeau is finally free and back in France since Monday evening. President Emmanuel Macron announced the news on X Thursday morning, expressing “immense joy and relief” for his family. He also praised the crucial role played by state services, the French embassy in Iran, and the Crisis and Support Center of the Quai d’Orsay in securing his release.

A Controversial Arrest

Olivier Grondeau, 34, was arrested on October 12, 2022, in Shiraz, southwestern Iran, while on a world tour. Accused of espionage and conspiracy against the Islamic Republic, he was sentenced to five years in prison in February 2024. Imprisoned in Evin Prison in Tehran, he repeatedly denounced his detention conditions, sharing his testimony through recordings sent to his family. “I have no choice but to be a defiant hostage now,” he stated last January.

A Long-Awaited Return

Greatly weakened both physically and psychologically, Olivier Grondeau will undergo a series of medical examinations. His return has sparked a wave of reactions, notably from Prime Minister François Bayrou, who rejoiced at his release after “29 months of ordeal.” Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot stated that “this release is a testament to French diplomacy.”

Two French Citizens Still Detained

Despite this positive news, two other French citizens, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, remain imprisoned in Iran since May 2022. Emmanuel Macron assured that “France’s efforts will not waver” in securing their release.
