Violent fire at Cap d’Agde: a campsite ravaged, almost 200 mobile homes destroyed and holidaymakers in shock

Cap d’Agde: Devastating Fire Tears Through Campsite, Hundreds of Holidaymakers Evacuated

A violent fire broke out on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the “Les Sables d’Or Village Club” campsite in Cap d’Agde (Hérault), destroying 181 mobile homes and 12 vehicles across 1.5 hectares. Nearly 600 holidaymakers were evacuated in a hurry as thick black smoke rose high and was visible for miles around.

Fanned by strong winds and surrounding vegetation, the flames spread rapidly. Over 200 firefighters were mobilized to contain the blaze, which was finally brought under control in the early evening. Authorities remained vigilant, using drones throughout the night to monitor for flare-ups.

Mass Evacuation and Emergency Shelter

Despite the scale of the blaze, no serious injuries were reported. Four people suffered mild smoke inhalation, with two taken to Sète hospital. Evacuations were swift but chaotic. “I have neither my car nor clothes for my kids. Nothing,” said one affected woman, temporarily housed in a gymnasium made available by the city.

In response, the city of Agde activated its municipal emergency plan. Hundreds of meals were distributed to evacuees that evening, and alternative accommodations were arranged by the following morning. “No one will be allowed back into the campsite for now,” warned Agde’s mayor, Sébastien Frey, who pledged to provide temporary housing solutions for displaced families.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the affected area and to comply with safety instructions.
