Racist attack in the Var: the suspect claims responsibility in chilling videos

Racist Murder Claimed in Var: Suspect Films Hate-Filled Video and Calls for Revolt

A Chilling Claim of Responsibility

In a series of videos posted on Facebook, Christophe B., 53, suspected of killing his Tunisian neighbor Hichem Miraoui on Saturday, May 31 in Puget-sur-Argens (Var), openly claims responsibility for his racist act. Facing the camera in a dim setting, he expresses his fear of a “forced Islamization” of France and calls on “the French” to wake up before threatening, “There will be plenty of guys like me. I’m just the first.”

Shortly after shooting his neighbor five times, the caterer posted this video in which he confesses to having “soiled his soul” while defending his action. He hurls racist insults and justifies his act as a call to revolt. “When your children embrace Islam, you will understand,” he warns.

Hatred Fueled for Years on Social Media

These hateful statements had been maintained by Christophe B. for several years on Facebook, sharing Islamophobic and xenophobic messages. In another video filmed before the attack, he brandishes a weapon and vows to “take out” “illegal immigrants” and “those ‘bicots’,” while pledging allegiance to the French flag.

Witnesses Describe a Determined and Organized Man

Despite claiming to have acted under the influence of alcohol, several witnesses, including two Kurdish survivors of the attack, describe a methodical man. They reported hearing multiple gunshots, being targeted, and seeing the suspect reload his weapon. These elements led the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office to open an investigation for murder and attempted murder with a terrorist motive.

An Act with Heavy Judicial and Symbolic Consequences

Placed in custody, Christophe B. faces life imprisonment. His act and the ideology behind it recall previous attacks, notably the 2022 shooting on Rue d’Enghien in Paris, where a far-right gunman targeted the Kurdish community.
