Israel intercepts a humanitarian ship: Paris demands explanations and denounces a possible violation of international law

Israeli Interception of Humanitarian Vessel Sparks Diplomatic Tensions and Accusations of International Law Violations

The Madleen, a sailboat chartered by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was intercepted on Monday, June 9, by the Israeli navy while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. On board were twelve international activists—including climate advocate Greta Thunberg and French MEP Rima Hassan—who were reportedly detained in what organizers claim were international waters. The vessel was redirected to Ashdod, a major commercial port in southern Israel.

According to Israeli authorities, the intervention was meant to prevent a breach of the naval blockade around Gaza. The Foreign Ministry stated that all passengers would soon be repatriated to their respective countries.

However, the operation has triggered a wave of criticism. Several political figures and human rights organizations denounced what they describe as a violation of international law. Turkey condemned the action as an “odious attack,” while legal experts argue that the interception was unlawful due to Israel’s lack of sovereignty in international waters and its duty, as an occupying power, to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

France Demands Accountability

With six French nationals among the passengers, the French government swiftly responded. President Emmanuel Macron called for their “prompt return,” and Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot demanded consular access and permission to visit the detainees. Diplomatic procedures are reportedly underway.

On the political front, France Unbowed (LFI) and the Green Party have condemned what they see as a breach of fundamental rights. LFI MEP Manon Aubry accused the French government of “complicit silence” and emphasized that her colleague Rima Hassan is protected by parliamentary immunity. Both parties have called for public demonstrations in support of the activists, including a rally at Place de la République in Paris.

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens—described by the UN as catastrophic—this interception has reignited international criticism of Israel’s blockade and raised serious questions about compliance with international legal norms in conflict zones.
