New National Assembly: Laurence Tubiana “acknowledges” the divisions within the NFP and withdraws her candidacy for Prime Minister

In a letter published on the social network X on Monday July 22, Laurence Tubiana, architect of the Paris agreement, “acknowledged” the opposition within the NFP and withdrew her candidacy for the post of Prime Minister. “I note that my name has met with opposition. All this no longer seems to me to lead to the appeasement we so badly need”, she wrote

While Laurence Tubiana seemed to enjoy consensus among the Socialists, Ecologists and Communists for the post of Prime Minister, the Insoumis were firmly opposed. Last week, Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France insoumise, called the idea “not serious”.

For its part, La France insoumise had instead put forward the candidacy of Huguette Bello, president of the Réunion department. However, she also declined the offer, due to a lack of consensus within the New Popular Front.

The left has “the duty and the capacity to exercise responsibility”.

“I’m returning to the battles that have always been mine”, wrote Laurence Tubiana on Monday. Trained as an economist, diplomat and specialist in climate issues, she is often cited as the “architect” of the Paris Climate Agreement adopted in 2015.

Describing herself as a “woman of the left and an ecologist”, Tubiana has been a member of the High Council for Climate since its creation, and heads the European Climate Foundation as well as the French Development Agency.

“I’m convinced of the key role played by civil society, social movements and associations that are fighting relentlessly against inequality, discrimination and the climate crisis”, she asserts, rejecting the myth of the providential person.

Despite the apparent divisions within the left, Tubiana remains convinced that the left “has the duty and the capacity to exercise the responsibilities to which voters have called it”.
