On Friday 10 May, the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, announced the death of Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke, aged 71. Renaud Van Ruymbeke, a leading figure in the French judiciary, has died. Eric Dupond-Moretti expressed his condolences to the judge’s family and loved ones, hailing his exceptional contribution to justice

Since his retirement in 2019, Renaud Van Ruymbeke, a passionate football fan and talented pianist, has left an indelible mark on the fight against corruption in France. He has investigated some of the most important politico-financial cases of recent decades, including the Urba affair, the investigations into Jérôme Cahuzac and the Balkany couple, and the Taiwan frigate affair. His investigation into the massive fraud perpetrated by Jérôme Kerviel in 2008 also left its mark.

Renaud Van Ruymbeke was a fervent advocate of financial transparency and integrity in the public sphere. His commitment to justice and his independence made him a respected and admired figure in the French judiciary.
