The British King, accompanied by his wife Camilla, plans to visit a centre dedicated to the fight against cancer

King Charles III is preparing to resume his public activities next Tuesday, marking his comeback since announcing his cancer in February, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace on Friday 26 April. Since the revelation of his illness, the British monarch had cancelled all official public engagements, although he continued to take on certain responsibilities and attend small meetings, including his weekly discussions with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Although Buckingham Palace provides few details about the King’s health and the exact nature of his cancer remains unknown, a palace spokesman said that ‘his treatment programme will continue, but doctors are pleased with the progress made so far, allowing the King to resume some public engagements’.

Charles III’s doctors described the progress of his condition as ‘very encouraging’ and remained ‘optimistic’ about his ongoing recovery, a Buckingham Palace spokesman added. The King, accompanied by his wife Camilla, will visit a cancer centre next Tuesday, where the royal couple will meet medical staff and patients, according to the palace.

Emperor Naruhito of Japan and his wife Empress Masako are due to make a state visit to the UK at the end of June, as guests of Charles, 75, and Camilla, 76. The meeting comes after the Japanese imperial couple attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London in September 2022.

The Buckingham spokesman said that the progress of Charles III’s health was considered ‘very encouraging’ by his doctors, who remain ‘optimistic’ about his ongoing recovery. The King’s public engagements will be decided on a case-by-case basis and will follow medical recommendations, but he will not be following a ‘full summer programme’.

Since the announcement of his cancer in February, Charles had cancelled all his official public engagements, but continued to fulfil certain official functions and to honour appointments in small groups, such as his weekly meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

As the first anniversary of the coronation of Charles III and Queen Camilla approaches, the royal statement expressed their deep gratitude for the goodwill and good wishes they have received from around the world over the past year.

Charles’ last public appearance was on 31 March, when he attended the Easter service before meeting the public outside St George’s Chapel in Windsor, west London.

As for the health of Princess Kate, Charles’ daughter-in-law, no details have been released since she was diagnosed with cancer on 22 March. The princess, aged 42, revealed in a video that she was undergoing ‘preventative’ chemotherapy without specifying the nature of her cancer, stressing that her family needed time, space and privacy during this ordeal.
