Tragic Ski Lift Accident in the Spanish Pyrenees
A serious ski lift accident occurred on Saturday, January 18, at the Astún ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. Located near the French border, between the Pourtalet and Somport passes, the incident left around 30 people injured, including 9 in serious condition, according to local authorities.
Technical Failure Suspected
According to Miguel Ángel Clavero, director of emergency services for the Aragón region, the accident was caused by a “problem with the pulley of one of the ski lifts,” leading to a loss of cable tension and the collapse of several chairs.
One of the victims, María Moreno, shared her experience with the public broadcaster TVE:
“We suddenly heard a noise, then we fell to the ground in the ski lift. We bounced several times. Some people were even thrown out of their seats. We were very scared.”
A witness on the scene described the chaotic moment:
“Suddenly, the ski lifts started bouncing, and people were flying.”
Massive Emergency Response
In response to the disaster, significant emergency resources were deployed. Five helicopters, over a dozen ambulances, and a field hospital were mobilized to evacuate the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Regional President Jorge Azcón stated that the three most severely injured individuals, including a woman airlifted by helicopter, were receiving intensive care. All skiers who were stranded on the ski lifts were successfully rescued.
Nationwide Shock
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his shock over the accident, stating in a message on social media: “The government extends its full support to the Aragón region.”
This tragic incident has caused widespread distress, as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure believed to have triggered the accident.
