Arrest of Mohamed Amra: 25 people held in police custody, three of whom were released, and accusations of a ‘determined criminal organisation’ surrounding the drug trafficker, according to the prosecutor

Mohamed Amra’s Arrest: A Complex International Investigation Unveils a Determined Criminal Organization

Drug trafficker Mohamed Amra, wanted for nine months, was arrested on February 22 in Bucharest, Romania, after escaping justice during his deadly escape in May 2024. The 30-year-old man, whose plan was to undergo surgery before fleeing to Colombia, was located thanks to a thorough international investigation.

A Well-Organized Criminal Network

Paris’s public prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, highlighted the existence of a carefully structured criminal organization surrounding Mohamed Amra. It included various teams of thieves, logisticians, lookouts, and commando members, all involved in his escape and flight. Heavy resources, including weapons and dedicated phone lines, were used to orchestrate the escape. In total, 25 people have been placed in police custody, including 14 new arrests recently made in France and internationally.

Imminent Return and Ongoing Investigations

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin stated that Mohamed Amra should be back in France in less than ten days, where he will be placed in total isolation before facing French magistrates. Searches have also taken place in several countries, including France, Romania, Morocco, and Spain, strengthening international police cooperation. France, in particular, set up liaison mechanisms in Bucharest to closely follow the investigation’s progress.

The attack during Mohamed Amra’s escape in May 2024, which led to the death of two prison officers and the injury of three others, remains a key element of the investigation.
