Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Co-Founder and Surf Music Icon, Dies at 82

Brian Wilson, singer, bassist, composer, and co-founder of the Beach Boys, has died at the age of 82, his children announced on Wednesday, June 11, via his official website and social media.
“We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our beloved father, Brian Wilson. We are at a loss for words. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. We know we share our grief with the world,” they wrote.

The Musical Genius Behind California’s Golden Pop

Widely regarded as a musical genius, Brian Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his two brothers, a cousin, and a friend. He was just 19 years old at the time. The group quickly rose to fame as a symbol of “surf music” and the California dream, with iconic songs like Surfin’ USA, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, I Get Around, Good Vibrations, and God Only Knows—the latter described by Paul McCartney as “the greatest song ever written.”

As a composer, arranger, and producer, Wilson helped propel the Beach Boys to international success, especially with the landmark album Pet Sounds, now considered a pop masterpiece.

A Life Shadowed by Inner Struggles

Behind the glittering image of the Golden Coast, Wilson battled serious mental health issues. Diagnosed with schizophrenia and worsened by drug use, he gradually withdrew from the group during the 1970s and fell into a deep depression.

Over time, he managed to recover and launched a solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1988. His turbulent life was later portrayed in the 2015 biographical film Love and Mercy. Toward the end of his life, Wilson was diagnosed with dementia and placed under conservatorship in May 2024.
