Deadly school shooting in Austria: at least ten dead, including the assailant, in Graz

Deadly School Shooting in Graz: Ten Killed Including the Gunman, Austria in Mourning

At least ten people were killed, including the suspected shooter, and twelve others seriously injured in a school shooting on Tuesday, June 10, in Graz, southeastern Austria. The tragedy occurred at the Dreierschützengasse federal high school, where a 21-year-old former student opened fire using a legally owned rifle and handgun. The assailant, an Austrian national from the region, took his own life in a school restroom shortly after the attack.

Among the victims were six women and three men. According to the city’s mayor, Elke Kahr, students and at least one adult were among those killed. Authorities have not yet released the ages of the victims or confirmed whether they were students, teachers, or school staff.

A Former Student, Armed and Without a Criminal Record

The motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage. The shooter, who had not completed his education at the school, had no criminal record and held a legal firearm license.

Police responded swiftly, deploying multiple special intervention units and a helicopter. All students were evacuated to a secure assembly point. A crisis response team was mobilized to support students and their families.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker condemned the event as a “national tragedy” and declared three days of mourning. “This is a dark day for our country, an unthinkable act of violence,” he stated in Graz. International reactions quickly followed: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was “deeply saddened,” while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed being “deeply shocked.”
