Donald Trump imposes new tariffs against Canada, threatening the auto industry and raising steel and aluminum taxes to 50%

Donald Trump Escalates Trade War: Increased Tariffs and Threat of Canada’s Annexation

Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum Doubled, Threat to Halt the Automotive Industry

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new escalation in the trade war between the United States and Canada. Starting March 12, tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum will rise from 25% to 50%, a decision made in response to a surcharge imposed by the Canadian province of Ontario on electricity exports to three U.S. states.

In addition to this increase, Trump threatened to impose further tariffs on Canadian cars starting April 2 if Canada does not remove certain trade taxes he calls “scandalous.” According to him, this could lead to the complete paralysis of Canada’s automotive industry.

Call for Canada’s Annexation and the End of Borders

True to his protectionist rhetoric, Trump has also renewed his call for Canada to become the “51st U.S. state.” He suggested that eliminating tariffs and taxes would make both nations stronger and more united. He even referred to the border between the two countries as an “artificial line,” reiterating that this integration would benefit Canadians, who would pay fewer taxes and enjoy greater security.

Canada Rejects Threats and Affirms Its Independence

This new offensive from Trump comes amid growing tensions, as Canada firmly rejects these proposals. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded forcefully, asserting that the country would never become part of the United States and that it would “win” against American trade threats. According to him, Canadians are always ready to face challenges, whether in trade or hockey, a sport in which the rivalry between the two nations is well-known.

Despite criticism and setbacks in his attempts to raise tariffs on various products, Trump persists in his approach, continuing to defend his protectionist vision and intensifying his nationalist rhetoric. The tensions between the two countries are expected to persist as the U.S. president continues to press forward with his agenda.
