Eurovision 2025: Louane ushers in a new era of French music born of yesterday’s failures

Eurovision 2025: Louane, France’s Emotional Bet Against Europe’s Rhythm

This year, Louane carries France’s hopes at the Eurovision Song Contest, with a heartfelt ballad and a strategy rooted in emotion, the French language, and a renewed sense of chanson.

A Carefully Orchestrated Wait

For months, Louane has moved quietly but decisively. Rumors of her Eurovision participation surfaced as early as fall 2024, but the singer maintained suspense, teasing clues in her album Solo before finally making it official in January: she will represent France at Eurovision 2025.

Her song, Maman, was unveiled in dramatic fashion—during halftime of the Six Nations rugby final at a packed Stade de France. A grand reveal for an intimate song: a contradiction that captures France’s current Eurovision approach—build anticipation, strike with precision.

A Performance Built on Discipline

Since the announcement, Louane has committed to rigorous preparation—months of vocal training, physical conditioning, and staging work. Backed by a dedicated team, she’s transformed into a stage athlete. “My lifestyle is the healthiest it’s ever been,” she recently said.

As the grand final approaches this Saturday, May 17, in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle, the 28-year-old singer is laser-focused. Her semi-final performance left a strong impression: minimalist staging, poetic visuals with cork shavings falling like sand from an hourglass, and a flawless vocal delivery.

And while the pressure builds, she’s far from alone. Fans consistently rank her in the top five of betting odds, and international media see her as a real contender—perhaps the first French winner since Marie Myriam in 1977.

France’s Bet on Authenticity

Over the past four editions, France has clearly shifted its Eurovision identity. After Barbara Pravi, La Zarra, and Slimane, Louane is continuing a bold new path: French-language songs, often autobiographical, rooted in chanson tradition. Voilà in 2021, Mon amour in 2024, Maman in 2025—simple titles, powerful impact, and instantly recognizable.

It’s a high-risk move in a contest often dominated by radio-ready pop bangers in C major at 123 BPM. Emotion is hard to deliver in just three minutes—especially when the theme is as weighty as death and mourning. Louane addresses her late mother, who passed in 2014, while reflecting on her own experience of becoming a mother.

“It’s a very risky genre that puts maximum pressure on the performer,” notes musicologist Joe Bennett. But it’s also a bet on authenticity. While some countries offer flashy dance numbers, France is choosing sincerity. And even if Europe sometimes passes over such entries, it never dismisses them.

A Unique Identity to Protect?

This deliberate return to chanson and the French language doesn’t guarantee victory, but it does carve out a distinct identity. “When your national stereotypes are that strong, you should lean into them,” says Eurovision expert Irving Wolther. And this cultural singularity may be catching on: countries like Lithuania, Latvia, and even Sweden are slowly returning to their native tongues.

While most entries this year are upbeat, high-energy songs meant to counterbalance the global gloom, Louane offers something quieter, deeper—but ultimately hopeful. “In the end, you see, I built my life… I’m doing better,” she sings to her mother.

A universal message, whispered aloud on a European stage that might just be craving honesty more than ever. And maybe that’s the real musical revolution at Eurovision.
