Fatal school bus accident in Eure-et-Loir: one pupil killed, twenty injured, driver tested positive for drugs and taken into custody

Fatal School Bus Accident in Eure-et-Loir: One Student Killed, Driver Tests Positive for Drugs

A tragic accident occurred on Thursday morning on the D927 near Châteaudun (Eure-et-Loir). A school bus carrying 35 students overturned, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old high school student and injuring 20 others.

A Provisional Toll

Following the accident at 7:40 AM, significant emergency resources were deployed. Six vehicles and around forty firefighters responded to the scene. An advanced medical post was set up to care for the injured, 14 of whom were transported to Châteaudun Hospital.

Driver Tests Positive for Drugs

The 26-year-old bus driver, who had no prior criminal record, underwent a saliva test that came back positive for drugs. However, this result still needs to be confirmed by a more in-depth blood analysis, as certain medications can interfere with test results. Pending the final results, the driver has been taken into police custody. He claims he was trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle when he lost control of the bus.

A Dangerous Road

Local officials had long warned about the hazards of the D927, a winding road bordered by ditches. The mayor of Châteaudun, Fabien Verdier, recalled that warnings had been issued requesting safety improvements, but no action had been taken.

Investigation Launched

The Chartres prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and injuries to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Minister of Transport Philippe Tabarot visited the scene to offer his support to the victims and their families. A psychological support unit has been set up at Émile Zola High School in Châteaudun, where the deceased student was enrolled.

The results of the driver’s toxicology analysis are expected later today and could shed light on responsibilities in this devastating accident.
