Facing the Flu Epidemic: 87 Hospitals Activate Emergency Plans as Authorities Urge Vaccination

The winter flu epidemic, which has intensified since early January, is putting significant pressure on the healthcare system. According to the Ministry of Health, 87 hospitals have activated the “Plan Blanc” (white plan), an emergency measure that allows hospitals to postpone certain surgeries and recall staff on leave to cope with the exceptional influx of patients. This level of hospitalizations is described as “exceptionally high” compared to previous flu seasons, according to Santé Publique France (SpF).

Health and Social Affairs Minister Catherine Vautrin stated on CNews-Europe 1 on Friday that up to “a hundred” facilities could be affected as the epidemic rapidly progresses.

A Concerning Situation for Vulnerable Populations

Santé Publique France also reported a significant increase in flu-related deaths, particularly among people aged 65 and older. This group, along with immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, infants with comorbidities, and residents of care homes, is most at risk from the disease.

The Call for Vaccination

In response to this situation, health authorities are reiterating that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent severe cases of both the flu and COVID-19. Catherine Vautrin highlighted the urgency of vaccination, noting that more than 70% of severe cases reported in emergency rooms involve people who are eligible for vaccination but remain unvaccinated.

The minister renewed her appeal: “Those who are not yet vaccinated should do so quickly to reduce complications.”

As the flu epidemic, which typically lasts ten to twelve weeks, reaches its peak, hospitals continue to adapt to this health crisis while urging the population to protect themselves.
