This follows a 2.7% reduction in 2022. France targets a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

For the second year running, greenhouse gas emissions have fallen in France. At a meeting in Mayenne for the European elections, on Wednesday 22 May the Prime Minister personally announced the figures provided by Citepa, the body responsible for the annual inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric pollutants.

‘We have received the final figures for CO2 emissions for 2023. They have actually fallen by 5.8% in France”, said the Prime Minister.

This follows a 2.7% drop in 2022. In March, Citepa had estimated a reduction of 4.8% for 2023 on the basis of preliminary data. ‘We have no lessons to learn from anyone when it comes to ecological and environmental efficiency’, added Gabriel Attal, while the majority list is trailing behind that of the Socialist Party led by Raphaël Glucksmann.

However, this reduction is still below the targets set by Paris. France is aiming for a 50% reduction in its emissions (-55% net) by 2030 to comply with the commitments of the European Union’s climate plan and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
