A road accident in La Rochelle on Wednesday has resulted in the elderly driver involved being admitted to a psychiatric hospital, according to information obtained by H24 NEWS from a source close to the investigation on Thursday

Of the seven children injured, two have already left hospital, while others remain under medical observation. In particular, a young girl treated in Tours is in a critical condition.

Another child is also in a serious but stable condition, hospitalised in Poitiers, while two others are being treated in La Rochelle, one of them in a serious condition.

The accident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, involved a group of children on bicycles and an elderly driver travelling in the opposite direction. The driver was arrested, but initial indications are that she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In response to this tragic event, the Rector of Poitiers, Bénédicte Robert, announced the setting up of a psychological support unit for the children and staff of the schools attended by the children involved in the accident.

The accident occurred at around 10 a.m. on the Avenue de Coligny in La Rochelle, as the children were on their way to an activity organised in a public park as part of an outing with the day-care centre.
