Longjumeau: A 20-Year-Old Patient Dies in the Emergency Room After a Sudden Health Deterioration

A 20-year-old woman passed away on Wednesday, January 8, at 7:30 PM in the emergency department of Longjumeau Hospital (Essonne), after being admitted earlier that morning. Cédric Lussiez, director of the Northern Essonne Hospital Group (GHNE), confirmed the information to H24 NEWS, following its initial report by Le Parisien.

Admitted in Stable Condition

According to the director, the patient arrived at the hospital “standing on her own two feet,” suffering from an undisclosed medical condition protected by confidentiality laws. Her condition was considered stable when she underwent a CT scan around 4 PM.

A Sudden Decline

It was after this examination that her condition rapidly deteriorated. “She returned very weak and then went into cardiac arrest. The medical team, supported by the emergency response unit (SMUR), immediately attempted resuscitation, but to no avail,” explained Cédric Lussiez. The young woman was pronounced dead at 7:30 PM.

Investigation Underway

The incident has deeply affected the medical staff. “This situation is devastating. We had to explain the unexplainable to her mother,” the director shared. An autopsy is currently being conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Additionally, a routine internal review will be carried out to examine this “serious and tragic adverse event,” in compliance with hospital protocols.

Overburdened Hospital Services

Like many hospitals, Longjumeau has been experiencing a surge in activity, exacerbated by a 25% seasonal increase due to flu cases since the Christmas holidays. The hospital had activated its white plan, a protocol designed to reorganize services during crises. However, the director clarified that no direct link can currently be established between the patient’s death and the hospital’s overcapacity.
