Michel Barnier Warns of Imminent Censure: “A Very Serious Moment”

This Tuesday, November 26, Prime Minister Michel Barnier addressed the nation with urgency as his government faces a potential motion of censure in Parliament amidst the ongoing examination of the 2025 budget.

“The moment is very serious,” he stated during the 8 p.m. news broadcast on TF1. He emphasized the significant risks of his government being overthrown: “If an alliance, improbable but possible, forms between the votes of Mr. Mélenchon from LFI, Ms. Le Pen from the National Rally, the Socialists, and the Greens, I fall. The government stops, and there is no budget.”

Michel Barnier also warned of severe economic consequences: “This will trigger a storm on the financial markets and serious turbulence.”

The 49.3, a Last-Resort Option

In light of this threat, the Prime Minister confirmed that he is “probably” considering invoking Article 49.3 of the Constitution to pass the budget. This budget aims to tackle France’s significant deficit, which heavily weighs on the country’s economic stability.

“We are already borrowing at very high interest rates to finance our debt, almost at the level of Greece,” he explained, stressing that France relies heavily on foreign investors, particularly from China and the United States.

A Lingering Political Crisis

Appointed in September by Emmanuel Macron to address the political crisis following the dissolution of the National Assembly, Michel Barnier, 73, also highlighted the financial markets’ growing concerns. The gap between French and German ten-year bond yields has reached its highest level since 2012, reflecting mounting anxiety.

“Why Would I Resign?”

When asked about the possibility of his resignation, Michel Barnier dismissed the notion: “Why would I resign? I hope to still be here in 2025. That depends on the National Assembly, and I know the rules of the game very well.”

Despite the uncertainties, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his determination to carry out his mission while urging parliamentarians to recognize the gravity of the situation.
