A car crashed into the terrace of a bar-restaurant on avenue du Père-Lachaise, in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, at around 7.30pm on Wednesday July 17, reports H24 MEDIA, confirming a report by Actu 17. One person has died, three are in absolute emergency and three others in relative emergency, according to a police source
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, while the passenger was arrested and tested positive for drugs and alcohol, according to sources close to the case. Accidental death is currently the main suspect, and the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office has not yet taken up the case, according to France Inter.
A large security perimeter has been set up, covering half of Place Gambetta, according to an H24 MEDIA reporter. Eric Pliez, mayor of the 20th arrondissement, visited the scene of the tragedy. “We think it was an accident, but the police are checking that there are no explosives inside the vehicle,” he told reporters. Some twenty people, shocked by the scene, were welcomed at the town hall.
