An investigation has been launched and handed over to the Banditry Unit of the Paris Judicial Police

A jeweller’s shop in the 8th arrondissement of Paris was robbed on Saturday 18 May. ‘Several individuals armed with guns used motorbikes to commit their crimes and escape,’ a police source told franceinfo, confirming a report by journalist Clément Lanot on X. The events took place at around 11.40am and targeted the Harry Winston jewellery store on Avenue Montaigne, near the Champs-Élysées, according to another police source. A shot was fired from outside the store, but no one was injured.

The value of the loot is not yet known. An investigation has been opened and handed over to the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme (BRB) of the Paris Judicial Police, as reported to AFP by the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office. A magistrate from the public prosecutor’s office went to the scene, according to the same source.

The Harry Winston jeweller’s shop on Avenue Montaigne had already been the target of two previous robberies in 2007 and 2008, when 900 items of jewellery were stolen. The loss was estimated by the jeweller’s insurer at 78.9 million euros, one of the highest in the world for this type of crime. In 2015, the Paris Assize Court sentenced eight men to between 9 months‘ and 15 years’ imprisonment.
