Pope Francis has suffered two episodes of acute respiratory failure, announces the Vatican

Health Update on Pope Francis: Two Episodes of Acute Respiratory Failure

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for over two weeks, remains in a “guarded” condition, according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 for bronchitis, which later developed into double pneumonia.

Medical Complications and Treatment

On Monday, March 3, Pope Francis experienced two episodes of “acute respiratory failure” caused by a significant buildup of endobronchial mucus, leading to bronchospasm. The Vatican’s latest health bulletin reported that doctors performed two bronchoscopies to clear the excessive secretions, and non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed in the afternoon.

Despite these complications, the Pope remains “alert, oriented, and cooperative.” However, his prognosis remains uncertain, and no timeline has been given for his discharge. This hospitalization marks his longest since his election in 2013.

Ongoing Concern and Spiritual Strength

The Pope had already faced a troubling respiratory crisis on Friday, heightening concerns among the Catholic community. Still, the Vatican reassured that he spent a peaceful night on Sunday and continues to collaborate actively with his medical team, undergoing respiratory physiotherapy.

On Sunday, Pope Francis expressed his gratitude to the faithful worldwide in a heartfelt letter, thanking them for their prayers and affection, which he said gave him strength and support during this challenging time.

The Vatican continues to monitor his condition closely as believers across the globe unite in prayer for the recovery of their spiritual leader.
