PSG champions, Paris overflows: François Bayrou calls for tougher justice in the face of post-victory violence

After Riots Following PSG’s Victory, Bayrou and Darmanin Call for Stricter Sentencing

The government is tightening its stance in response to the violence that followed Paris Saint-Germain’s recent title win. On Tuesday, June 3, during a session of Questions to the Government at the National Assembly, Prime Minister François Bayrou expressed support for the introduction of mandatory minimum sentences for those involved in public violence.

Toward Mandatory Minimum Sentences

Questioned by MP Paul Christophe (Horizons), who denounced a “climate of fear” after the incidents and deaths linked to the celebrations, the Prime Minister responded: “Where the law currently sets maximum sentences, we could also introduce minimum sentences.” Bayrou also supported a simplification of the criteria for aggravating circumstances, especially in cases of group or premeditated violence. He argued that these conditions are “too complex” and called for a system that is “clearer and easier to apply.”

Justice Minister Favors Tougher Measures

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin had already taken a stand earlier in the day, announcing on platform X that he wanted to eliminate suspended sentences “for any assault on a representative of the State.” He also advocated for the removal of mandatory sentence reductions and the systematic imposition of minimum prison terms once guilt has been established. According to Darmanin, “the law must evolve radically.”

First Sentences Handed Down

On Monday, June 2, four individuals arrested during the weekend riots were tried in immediate proceedings. They received suspended sentences ranging from two to eight months, along with fines and mandatory citizenship courses for some of them. More hearings were scheduled for Tuesday.

Some Provisions Already Passed by Parliament

Part of the measures now being demanded by members of the government are already included in the juvenile justice reform law passed by Parliament on May 19. However, several of its provisions are currently under review by the Constitutional Council and could still be censored.
