Ram car attack in Munich: suspect admits to the attack and cites Islamist religious motivation, authorities say

Munich Car-Ramming Attack: Suspect Admits to the Act and Cites Religious Motivation

The attack in Munich on Thursday, February 13, left 36 people injured, including two in critical condition, after a vehicle plowed into a crowd at a labor union protest. A two-year-old girl remains in serious condition. According to police, the toll could have been worse if officers had not been present to quickly neutralize the vehicle by opening fire.

A Premeditated Act with Religious Motivation

The suspect, a 24-year-old Afghan, admitted to deliberately driving into the crowd. According to Attorney General Gabriele Tilmann, he justified his actions with a “religious motivation.” During his arrest, he reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” and prayed. However, authorities state that there is no proven link between him and any Islamist organization such as ISIS.

An analysis of his phone uncovered several religious messages, and his social media activity portrays him as a highly devout individual who frequently shared religious content.

A Profile Without Criminal History

The suspect arrived in Germany in 2016 at the age of 15 and was legally residing in Munich, where he worked in the security sector as a store detective. He was also known on social media for his bodybuilding activities and participation in competitions in Bavaria.

A psychiatric evaluation found no mental disorders that could have impaired his judgment. He had no prior criminal record and was not under any deportation orders.

Reactions and Future Measures

The attack, which took place on the eve of the Munich Security Conference, has sparked strong reactions from authorities. Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the act as “horrific” and pledged measures, including the suspect’s possible expulsion. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “full solidarity” with the victims. The investigation is ongoing to clarify the exact circumstances of the attack.
