Saint-Étienne: a threatening armed man shot dead by a local police officer Saint-Étienne: a threatening armed man shot dead by a local police officer

On Tuesday 26 November, a threatening man with a knife was shot dead by a local police officer in Saint-Étienne town centre shortly before 6pm. The incident, confirmed by the Saint-Étienne public prosecutor to H24 NEWS, is the subject of two separate investigations.

The facts
The man, unknown to the police, allegedly threatened a woman in the middle of the street, putting his knife to her throat. The municipal police were alerted and quickly intervened. Given the seriousness of the situation, one of the officers fired to neutralise the man, who died on the spot, according to the public prosecutor.

Investigations underway
Two investigations have been opened by the Saint-Étienne public prosecutor’s office. The first is to establish the circumstances surrounding the attempted murder perpetrated by the individual. The second concerns the use of the weapon by the municipal police officer, on the charge of ‘murder by a person acting in an official capacity’.

The Saint-Étienne public prosecutor, David Charmatz, went to the scene to supervise the initial investigations.
