Sweden: a dozen people killed in a shooting at an education centre, the assailant dead

Deadly Shooting at an Educational Center in Örebro: “Dozen” Dead, Assailant Deceased

A shooting occurred on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at an educational center in Örebro, a city located approximately 160 km west of Stockholm, resulting in “a dozen” casualties, according to Swedish authorities. This tragedy is now considered the deadliest school shooting in Sweden’s history.

The Toll and Initial Investigation Details

The educational center, Campus Risbergska, was attended by adults preparing for the equivalent of the baccalaureate. The suspected shooter, unknown to the police, opened fire, killing several people. The initial toll reported five injuries, including the suspect, who later succumbed to his injuries after apparently turning the weapon on himself. As the investigation progressed, the death toll was updated to “a dozen” people, according to local police.

The suspect had no known connections to criminal gangs, and authorities quickly concluded that no further attacks were expected. The Swedish prosecutor has launched an investigation into serious charges such as attempted murder, arson, and violations of firearms laws.

An Unimaginable Tragedy

Initially, authorities urged the public to stay clear of the area as dozens of police vehicles and emergency teams responded. A large security perimeter was set up around the establishment, with nearby schools also locked down for several hours before being gradually evacuated.

A teacher at the center, who spoke to the Swedish teachers’ union, explained that he heard gunshots before barricading himself in his classroom while awaiting updates. “We activated the alert on the security app and stayed in communication with my colleagues,” he explained.

Political and Social Reactions

The shooting has shocked all of Sweden, a country where violent incidents in schools are relatively rare, although gang-related violence and homemade bomb explosions have become more frequent in some areas. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his deep sadness over the horrific act of violence, sending his thoughts to the victims and their families: “It is a very painful day for all of Sweden. Being locked in a classroom, fearing for your life, is a nightmare no one should have to experience.”

Swedish authorities also pointed out that similar incidents, though rarer, have occurred in recent years in the country’s educational institutions. In March 2022, a student fatally stabbed two teachers in a high school in Malmö, and in October 2015, a man killed three people in a school in Trollhättan.

The Investigation Continues

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the exact causes of the violent act. Police emphasized that while the situation seems under control, understanding the shooter’s motivations remains crucial, including examining his personal background and any potential connections.

This incident in Örebro comes amid growing tensions related to gun violence in certain neighborhoods of Sweden. While schools remain relatively safe, this tragic event raises questions about how authorities should address the increasing violence in Swedish society.
