Ukraine: Donald Trump expresses anger at Putin and threatens Russia with new sanctions and oil taxes

Trump Angry at Russia and Threatens Economic Sanctions After Call for Transition Government in Ukraine

Rising Tensions and Economic Pressures
In an interview with NBC on Sunday, March 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his anger toward Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russia suggested the establishment of a transition government in Ukraine excluding President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump called this proposal unacceptable and stated that he intended to discuss the situation with Putin in the coming days.

The U.S. president also warned of potential economic sanctions if Russia fails to reach an agreement to end the conflict. “If Russia and I cannot come to an agreement to stop the bloodshed, and if I believe Russia is to blame—whether or not that’s the case—I will impose additional tariffs on all Russian oil,” Trump specified. He added that these tariffs would affect oil and other products from Russia.

A Threat That Contrasts with Recent Closer Ties
Trump’s strong stance comes after several weeks of rapprochement, during which discussions had seemed to pave the way for a ceasefire. However, tensions have escalated again with Russia’s actions, which have intensified its strikes in Ukraine. Trump emphasized that the situation in Ukraine remained a top priority for him, and that any solution must involve concrete actions to end the conflict.

The exchange of threats has intensified, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reaffirmed that no adequate response from Russia has been received regarding the U.S. proposals for an unconditional ceasefire.
