War in Ukraine: after the Paris summit, a fragile message of unity and Macron’s call for lasting peace

Diplomatic Tensions Over Ukraine: Europe Seeks Its Place Amid U.S.-Russia Talks

The recent conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has unsettled European allies, who fear being sidelined in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. In response, several European leaders gathered urgently in Paris on Monday, February 17, under the leadership of Emmanuel Macron, to present a united front against these diplomatic maneuvers.

A Fragile European Consensus

During the meeting, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Giorgia Meloni, Pedro Sanchez, along with the heads of European institutions and NATO, reaffirmed their commitment to securing a “lasting peace” in Ukraine, contingent on “strong and credible security guarantees.” However, divisions emerged, particularly over the potential deployment of troops in Ukraine to oversee a future ceasefire.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed readiness to consider military involvement under certain conditions, provided there was clear U.S. support. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed the idea as “premature,” while Poland categorically ruled out any participation.

Europe Confronts U.S.-Russia Negotiations

This meeting took place ahead of scheduled U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, aimed at discussing possible negotiations over Ukraine. While Washington has downplayed their significance, the Kremlin has already mentioned “potential negotiations.”

In this context, Emmanuel Macron is calling for a more sovereign and proactive Europe in defense matters. “We must accelerate the implementation of our sovereignty, security, and competitiveness agenda,” he emphasized, stressing the need for a coordinated effort between Europeans, Americans, and Ukrainians.

As Europe struggles to maintain its influence on the Ukrainian conflict, the coming weeks will be crucial in defining its role amid these high-stakes diplomatic maneuvers.
