War in Ukraine: Emmanuel Macron envisages a ‘truce’ in the coming weeks after his visit to Washington and talks with Donald Trump

Emmanuel Macron in Washington: Key Talks on the War in Ukraine and US-EU Trade Relations

A Possible “Ceasefire” in Ukraine and the Need for Security Guarantees

During his visit to Washington, French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the war in Ukraine with his US counterpart, Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox News, Macron stated that a “ceasefire” could be possible in the coming weeks, but emphasized that “security guarantees” are necessary to prevent a resurgence of hostilities. He specified that “any peace agreement” must avoid Ukraine’s “capitulation” and be based on solid foundations to ensure lasting stability in the region.

The Issue of European Troops and Ukrainian Minerals

The two leaders also addressed the issue of European military involvement in Ukraine. Macron insisted that Europe is ready to send troops to guarantee peace, but emphasized that this decision would only be made after a solid peace agreement. Meanwhile, Trump discussed a near-completion deal regarding access to Ukrainian minerals, which he sees as crucial for recouping the military costs the US has incurred since the conflict began. This discussion about minerals also paved the way for a possible visit by Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House in the coming days.

The Trade Agenda and Tariffs Between the US and Europe

In addition to discussions on Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron advocated for more equitable trade between the US and the European Union, which faces the threat of new tariffs. The French president hoped he had convinced Trump of the need to streamline trade and ensure fair competition between industries on both sides of the Atlantic. Trump, for his part, confirmed that the imposition of tariffs would proceed according to the planned timeline, despite Macron’s concerns.

This visit allowed the two leaders to lay the groundwork for future discussions, both on the military and commercial fronts, with particular focus on the war in Ukraine and its impact on international relations.
